Which make better pets rats or hamsters?

i recently moved into an apartment and had to give away my cat and was wondering which of these two i should get base your answer on which is cleaner and smells better and is the easiest to look after. tanx in advanceWhich make better pets rats or hamsters?
Rats are smarter, friendlier %26amp; will be much more interactive with you. They do need a bigger cage, but it will probably fit on a dresser or other piece of furniture. You should get 2 of the same sex, though, because they'll be much happier that way %26amp; you'll also enjoy watching them interact together.

As for care, they probably take about the same amount. No cedar of pine shavings for either of them-- both are really bad for small animals.

I've lived with several rats %26amp; hamsters through the years %26amp; love both, but rats are definately better pets if you want someone to interact with you. We've got both males %26amp; females (kept separate of course).Which make better pets rats or hamsters?
I have heard rats are better pets...
Rats are excellent pets. Unless you have been blessed to own one, you do not realize how smart and clean they are. Hamsters tend to be prone to biting, and can not handle younger children well. I have had both. My pet rat use to ride on my shoulder while I drove. He had a large cage with a door that opened up to the top of my bed. He let himself in and out with out escaping. He lived to be about 5 and half years old. You need to give them attention daily. Socks would wait for me when I walked into a room so I would take him out. He loved popcorn(would steal it out of the bowl I ate from and hide behind the pillow to eat). Cracked me up. Fresh vegs(easy on the green), cheese once in a great while,: all out of my hand.Rats are easier to train also. I always recommend rats. Too many problems with hamsters
I have 2 rats but grew up w/ hamsters. Several years ago I ';saved'; a rat from being snake food from my ex's snake. Long story but I've been a rat lover every since. A lot of people have the wrong idea about them. They are extremely intelligent. If you are wanting a pet that doesn't require much attention, go for a hamster. Rats are very social and enjoy attention. Which is cleaner and smells better? They are both about the same EXCEPT, it is much easier to bathe a rat b/c they are so much friendlier and tamer; therefore, they tend to be cleaner. (Mine get a bath in the bathroom sink w/ baby shampoo and LOVE it.)
Definetly hamster, cause theyre easy to take care of, fun and cute!!
Although I have only had hamsters and guinea pigs I would recommend a rat! My mate has a couple and they are extremely friendly and intelligent chaps! Nevertheless, hamsters are very fun and cute and do not need quite such a big cage as rats, but they don't always last that long...

I wish you the very best luck in whichever animal you choose as they both make wonderful pets!

Guineapig Guy x
well it depends on what you like i have not had a rat before but i have 5 hamsters right now and two mice and two fish and two cats so i know alot about animals....... oh ya and two frogs and one seven legged spider. anyway if you like a animal that is easy to tame and something to train and if it gets lost it cant crawl under a door like a hamster. wheather you ike it or not its kind of hard to take care of both and you have to take the responsible time to take care of the hamster for 1-2 1/2 years or a rat for about the same or so and their both nocternal and hamsters and rats are teritorial but if you can get a big anough cage and your getting a rat i suggest you get another rat so they are not lonly when you gone hamsters are the same but a female can get on top of another girl (if you know what i mean) my hamster cookie had babies and when they got old enough to mate gothica the only male i had found licking himself with one of the females in the sex posion so i took gothica and put him in another cage then i look back and i see one of the girls screwing the other female anyway the point is you have to be careful of what you get. because if the female is with the male to long she will fight with him because of teritorial problems so if you hear them fight put one of them in a canester or something then buy a bigger cage and make sure you feed them or they will eat each other. so i really dont know witch is better thats like saying is gorge bush better than samantha buckler. ? thats right you dont know who the hell samantha buckler is right? right!! so you cant really know witch is better because it depends on what you like and if your home all the time and if you like sounds at night and if you can aford it or not. so i hope you under stand what the hell im saying and i hope none of this hurts anyone im only 14 so if i say something here that im not supposed to say im sorry in advance i really am sorry. so please forgive me. and i hope you take this into conceration and im sorry about your cat i got both of my other cats taken away from me and guess who from? my priciple (sorry i have grade like 3 spelling and im slow) (so stick with me here) lol by the way samantha buckler is me lol. so now you sorta know. if you want any more info contact me at samie_buckler@hotmail.com or lifesuxchicky@hotmail.com or samanthabuckler@yahoo.ca thanx a hole whack and your welcome because i love helpin ppl and animals out!!
Rats, by far. I had 11 at one time, because one of mine had babies, and they were all so very clean. They all had the best temperment you could ever ask for, they were very sweet.

I had them in my bedroom and everytime I would walk in they would all go to the front of the cage, and hang on the wires, so of course I would let them out and run around. The mom stayed by my side always, she would just sit on my shoulder as I would walk around the house, just loved being by me.

None of my rats EVER bit me. Even with 11 rats they didnt stink, as long as you clean the cage when your supposed to, about once a week. But the rats themselves dont smell. You can also potty train them. I trained all of mine not to go to the bathroom on my floor, and only go in one area of the cage, but they also do this naturally.

%26amp; to the answer somewhere above, they dont eat everything, they do like paper though. I found that out when I was writing my college semester final. =P

I also did end up getting hamsters, didnt find any of the same results. They were cute though, but bad temperment, and peed everywhere.

Rats are the best rodent, in my opinion.
Hamsters are better because they emit less odors and cleaner droppings; both are good
Hamsters make the better pet.
hamster of course rats are kinda ewwwww
defiantly hamsters, they're more cuddly and easy to look after, if a rat gets out, good luck finding it, but a hamster is more docile.
Which ever one you want, go to the pet store and look at both talk to the store handler and ask which of these out of the selection is the nicest they will tell you. But from experience I found looking after a rat to be easier, you can feed them a variety of things. Hamsters can be picky, and can only eat hamster feed. As for smell they both smell as bad as the other. But I would choose a rat because Rats are very nice, clean, love-able creatures mine lived, 41/2 years (most live 2).
Both require about the same amount of maintenance and both are great pets for the right owner. Since you are accustomed to the interaction between yourself and your cat, I would suggest a rat. They are very intelligent and I think you will enjoy their behaviour patterns more. Both can be very smelly if their cages are not kept clean.
I would have to say rats. I own two and they are great apartment pets. Unlike a hamster they are very intelligent, calm and a little bigger. You have to keep their cage clean as with any animal and you will avoid them smelling. My rats are allowed to walk around on the carpet but they always come back to their cage also you could go to a pet store and buy a plastic looking ball and put your rat in it so they can get more exercise. I generally feed my rats a healthy diet of fruits and vegetable as well as rat food. My brother used to have a hamster and that little ';thing'; was just pure evil..Always biting you even when we were trying to feed him..Oh and another thing rats live longer...
Hmm.. rats are much smarter, but don't live very long and have MANY health problems, tumors are VERY VERY common in rats.

Hamsters live 3 years, rats are maybe 2.

Hamsters have fewer, but don't bond as much.

Rats in the long run cost more, but eat most things, and hamsters cost alot in the begining, then you can let them live on under 10bucks a month

Hope they does some help
Hamsters are nice but they die in less than 3 years. They stick food in their pouches. So if you let it out of the cage make sure the pouches are empty or they will store food in corners. I used to let mine out and they come back when you knock on the floor. One time she got under the refrigerator and I had to take the grate off the front to get her out. They can't eat lettuce because I had one that choked to death on it. They sleep all day and come out of their little houses at night. I had a ball for her to play in outside the cage and you have to block stairways or they will roll down. I had a pair once and the female ate the babies. They are nice pets. You should get 1 to start with. You can bury them in the garden pretty easily. I never had a rat except in traps.
well i think a pet rat cause they as well as hamsters stay clean and such, but a rat isn't as jumpy as a hamster when tring to pick 'em up...Rats are every smart and they can learn tricks as well as hamsters but to me i like rats cause they are big and they dont jump as much, as a hamy, oh, oh, and they loved all the attention they can get cause rats are social animals as are humans...

But i love hamys too...
Go with a pair of rats! I've heard soooo many good things about them. At this piont I don't think you can even go wrong with pet rats. I'm sure everybody has, and will tell you the same.
RATS!! Rats are very intelligent , clean , and loving. They are almost like miniature dogs. I have had six of them so I would know.Oh , and NEVER get mice.I've had them too and it was a nightmare!
RAT

They are more intelligent clean and friendly !!

If you get two females they will not smell at all but if you are living in an apartment i dont know how much room there would be coz you need two and a very big cage :D
I have had both. Let me put it this way, I had rats, owned one hamster, and now have rats again. Never make that mistake again let me tell you. Hamsters are stupid, the nip and bite, Rats are friendlier and smarter and are like actual pets where hamsters aren't.
Hamsters are more active and bite more. Rats are less active and both don't smell. Only undomesticated rodents smell.
uh. i would say hamsters.

you can hold them once they get used to you.

both of them can be clean and unsmelly as long as you clean their cage once a week.

i guess hamsters but you would have to watch it quite i bit because they like to try to escape or chew on their metal bars.

i dont know much about rats so i cant exactly help you there.

if you need any more information jsut post another question board and i can answer it [about hamsters or cats]

(:
you are going to get about a 50/50 answer to this one.

i would have to say rats though. they are super smart, friendly, loving, and just fun to watch and play with. i would imagine that the smell would be about the same. just keep up with cleaning the cages

well I've had them both and hamsters are more easier to take care of. and they don't stink!BUT! you WILL have to clean their cage once a week[or they will stink] and you Have to get them a ball to roll around in and its best to get 2 boys or two girls so they dont get lonely.
Rats are far easier to tame, hamster can be quite moody and viscious, rats dont smell as bed as hamsters and dont try and squeeze out of any tiny gap they find, seriously you'd amazed at the size of the minute spaces a hamster can get through.
Rats are kinda' gross but I heard they are very intelligent creatures. Hamsters aren't too bright but they are cute, soft and fluffy. As for smell, I would say they both smell as clean as you keep their tank. I would choose a hamster over a rat anyday. How about a pet mouse? I heard those are great pets, too, and they are clean, cute and easy to look after.
rats are actually pretty smart pets, but hamsters sleep a lot and you have to be very very gentle with them. Both are about the same in cleanlieness and i dont think any of them smells good. Your choice.
