Why do people breed rats?

I've always wanted to know this. I tried looking it up but didn't get any info. My mom said her fam used to do it and sell them to pet stores? Is this why or are there other reasons? It's just something I'm very curious about. Thanks! Why do people breed rats?

~SWhy do people breed rats?
Sadly, rats are amongst the most common animals used during biological experiments, such as studying the effects of hormones, drugs, etc. on animals for inducing or inhibiting diseases (for example, learning side-effects of drugs that are not yet ready for clinical trials in humans).
OK, I can only speak for me, but I bred and raised rats, many years ago. They were actually good pets; bright and friendly. They were small, clean, and easy to care for. My children enjoyed them as a pet. We had a cage for them but let them out to play with.
There's various reasons

1. to sell to petstores

2. to sell to people (i.e. families)

or

3. To keep

but this is really a question for SpazRats
to get more rats and to make $ selling them
