they probably don't live together so much as share the same living space.
and rats eat anything. ANYTHING. my pet rats love eating superworms and mealies, and im pretty sure theyd be just as happy tearing into a big juicey cockroach.
i'm also pretty sure that cockroachs would eat the rat too, especially carcasses.
i would think that in 'the wild' they eat each other frequently, but since both pests breed so populously, them eating each other doesn't dent their numbers too much
