Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?

or any other diseases? if you let your rat walk all over you should you really wash your hands well or is it just like petting a dog?Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?
Well, it is well known that domesticated house animals do not carry salmonella unless they receive it from a source, such as contaminated eggs or bacteria. However, even though an animal might get salmonella, it doesnt necessarily mean that a human will too. Animal and human immune systems are very different and what affects an animal may do different things to people. Rats generally are very clean and are not known carriers of salmonella. However, just like any pet, you should use proper hygiene after handling the rat. Good luck and BEST ANSWER!Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?
No and they can't carry rabies either. It is just like petting a dog, and you should wash your hands after that too.

Another thing to consider is they live in a 'glorified litter box', so they are constantly stepping in their poop, so you should wash your hands just for that reason.

Fish and poultry can carry salmonella, but not mammals. I believe amphibians and reptiles too, but I'm not sure on that.
Pet rats are domesticated and don't carry diseases. It's just like petting anything else, their poop isn't exactly ';healthy'; and can contain bacteria etc obviously but that's the same with any animal and again after handling any animal you should wash you're hands..
Just like dogs =]

You should still wash your hands after playing with any animal, just to be on the safe side.
Erm no...Except wild ones. Pet rats are great, they don't smell as bad as hamsters and in my opinion they're extremely clean rodents.
