honestly i dnt recommend a hamster. It has lots of fun and interesting information about hamsters. You can learn about them, and tell your Mom, or print pages for her to read. For example, the Syrian hamster originated in the deserts of Syria, and that is why it stores food in its cheeks... as a desert animal, it has very little concentrated pee, so it's cage does not have to be cleaned as often as a mouse or rat's cage and the smell is much less. Tell her stuff like hamsters are nicer, and I know this from my own personal experiece. Also, a hamster does not have as big of poop, bodies, and they don't have to have as big of cages.

You need to do your research. Print out plenty of information to show her and some pictures also. Prove to her you know how to take care of it and know everything about them. And show her that rats and hamsters are completely different. That'll help convince her.

i really agree that rats are better than hamsters. Maybe you should start asking for rats. If thats not an option, force your mom to research hamsters and rats. She'll easily see they're much different. also show her picture of really adorable hamsters.
hamsters are NOT rats! They eat different food, have different personalities, have different sizes, have different care requirements, and so on. Besides, what's so bad about having your mom thinking they're rats? (other than being totally incorrect)
Compare a hamster to a rat. Like with a picture, or try and take her to the pet store and show her the difference. If you go to a pet store they can probably give you pro advice.
maybe make a cool little chart with info on each and explain the differences. they are all rodents, but hamsters are definately not rats.
take her to the pet shop and show her how cute they are
Compare it to a real rat and how alot of them are giant sized as big as a freakin trash bag!!
Show her a robo hamster. Those things are just too damn cute.
