rats can chew through anything if they have a reason to like glass, metal, and even concrete. it is definitely possible a rat chewed through the can. i gave my pet rats a nut that i couldn't even cut open with a knife and within minutes they had it opened and eaten.Can rats gnaw through a metal can?
i was watching a show on animal planet and they had this most extreme show and the rat was number one for chewing because they can chew through a 6 inch thick sewage pipe.

sewer rats. no problem. pet/feeder rats. yes but, not if you just leave them. they have to be REALLY hungry or really board.
