Are They Girl Rats Or Boy Rats?

So I just got three baby rats (they're abt month and a week or so old.) and i can't tell if they're girls or boys. I know that one is a boy, but yesterday, you couldn't tell..

They might be late bloomers but when they are old you will definately be able to tell because basically the males have testicles and the females don't! You can still tell them apart now, the gap between the anus and the penis will be larger than the gap between the anus and the vagina. If you do have different sexes though, I would separate the males from the females and keep them in separate cages. Although they might be brothers and sisters, they may still mate. Might sound a bit disgusting but as there are no other rats around, to them it is the only way to carry on the gene pool.

I will say though.. I REALLY hope they are all same sex, because if not.. you're going to have tons of baby rats. :C


Baby rats can mate as early as 5-6 weeks old. If you do have a mixture of boys/girls then the females might get pregnant really soon, and with them being so young.. if they get pregnant it's going to be very bad for their health. It might even kill the mother.





Did you get them from a breeder or a store?


Usually good breeds would not have given you mixed sex rats.

awww i'v got two boy rats u should be able to tell if they are boys soon !!! i'm not sure how long though if that helps lol
one way you can tell is that by now the boys might have, well, i don't know how to say this without sounding disgusting but they might have little testicles right under their tail (they look more like an abscess). But girls will only have tiny nipples on their stomachs. But you should probably wait a little longer till you start naming them because their private parts usually aren't very distinct until they are about 2-3 months old.
