to answer your question: noIn spite of all their rage, are conservatives still just rats in a cage?
No, that would be those who refuse to let themselves free of the cage and see the truth. Kind of like animals who don't cross the line at the invisible fence--one bad experience stepping over the line, and they are conditioned to never go back. Never question--never get answers. In spite of all their rage, are conservatives still just rats in a cage?

I have owned two different rats, but both are now deceased. Sadly, I've become allergic

:(

My last rat had to be hairless, but even he bothered my allergies.

My first rat was named Lewis and I got him at a year of age from an animal shelter.

My second rat was named Leon and he was found in a moving truck. It was a crazy situation where a lady was driving cross-country with 54 animals in a Penske truck. He was living in the cab in a duffel bag!
I HAVE 1 RAT , THEY MAKE GOOD PETS
i LOVE rats i just well sadly dont own 1 but i do have a cat and a dog
we have 3 total...2 girls and a boy :) the girls are melinda and magpie, and the boy is matticus :)

we love them and out of 25 pets, they are our favorite...besides our whites tree frog named milton :)
Awwww I have jumbo fancy rats they are great and to be honest well I kinda dont know how many I have, they just started breeding one day and never stopped so I give alot of them away and send some back to the pet shop I have all colors and kinds even albino and black ones... I like rats! But I don't have any now because my hubby don't like them. I think they are cute!
Little white rats with red eyes playing in their cages? Yes

Big gray rats running loose in the attic or basement? NO!
When I was a kid, my Dad was doing summer classes each year to get his degree. One of his classes in Psychology involved training a white rat to do stuff. At the end of the course the students were allowed to take the rats home if they wanted so my Dad brought Maverick home. He was a great pet. We let him run around in the kitchen and he liked to raid the cat's food dish (the cat's were afraid of him and we have a cute picture of the cats backing away from the rat while the rat eats from their dish). We built an outdoor pen for him but I, being only 6 forgot and left him out and he disappeared forever.

Later in my adult life, I had 2 rats and both bit me and I didn't like them as much but then they weren't big white lab rats.
No rats No comments!
i have had two rats in my life a brown and white rat when i was 10 named squekers and a hairless rat 3 years ago named rat fink..
I don't currently have any rats but in our 4-H club we have ';Pocket Pets'; and rats are included in this project. They are becoming very popular and last year they were included in our county fair.
I love rats and I want one but my fiance won't let me... I'm working on him though!
I love rats. I don't have any, though. Just a dog, a Siamese Fighting Fish (betta) and 3 hermit crabs. I might get some one day, I hope. ;-)

Should you feed rats or mice to snakes?

I read that rats are alot more nutricious and better for snakes. well i have a colombian red tail boa and a ball python well please let me know thanks!!Should you feed rats or mice to snakes?
Either a mouse or a rat would be nutritious for your snake. It doesn't matter which one you feed it because they both are very nutritious for your snakes, but some day you will need to feed your snakes rats because mice will be too small for them too eat and will not give the snake all the nutrients it needs. A snakes main diet is eating rodents, so either a mouse or a rat would be nutritious, but some day you will need to switch your snakes over to rats because they will be too large to only have a mouse.Should you feed rats or mice to snakes?
Yes, feed your snake mice or rats, that's fine. Buying pre-killed, frozen rodents at a pet store is the smartest decision, because the rodents cannot harm your snake like the live feeds can.

I can't imagine that one rodent is more ';nutritious'; than the others, and the difference between feeding your snake rats or mice is all based on the size. Like it's been said before, don't feed your snake anything bigger than the widest part of its body, otherwise it will regurgitate and will probably be shy about eating for a while.
I also have red tailed boas and ball pythons and have had them for many years. I much prefer rats over mice. I breed my own at home and rats are WAY less smelly and rat pups that are a few weeks old are usually what I give to the ball pythons. I let them get a bit bigger before I feed to the boas.
As far as nutrition goes, Mice and Rats are equivalent. It depends on the size of the snake (as others have said) and what they will eat. Some snakes are picky eaters. Some people also feed gerbils, hamsters, or African soft furred rats.
You should feed them mice, not rats.

Rats can actually kill them, it happened to my friend's snake.

Something happened where the rat bit the snake and i don't remember how it died exactly but it was caused by the rat bite.
You can feed either to your snake. It all depends on how big your snake is or whatever your snake prefer. Sometimes the prefer rats over mice. You should feed your snake a mouse or rat the same size as the biggest part of your snakes body.
I think the only factor in whether you feed your snake rats or mice has to do with the size of the snake and or how often you want to feed the snake.
I would feed them only a few rats and mice every few monthes. Mabye a rat and 3 mice every month? I'm not sure, I don't know anything about snakes. I think you should just use rats and mice for snacks
rats is what i prefer but ask the local pet store where you get your live feed, it may depend on the species.

what kind of answer is yes?
It all depends on the size of your snake. bigger snakes like boas or pythons should eat rats, and smaller snakes like garden or milk snakes should eat mice.
Yea i would stick with rats but if mice are cheaper then go for them if u feel like it u kno ur snake better than anyone choose what he likes best which one will he lunge at and which will he eventually eat
Well, snakes live off of rats and other animals in the wild. So yes, it should be fine to feed some to them.

  • What size water bottle do you use for your rats?

i have to use the ones you get for rabbits as they drink so muchWhat size water bottle do you use for your rats?
I have 1 rabbit sized one and 3 small ones attached to their cage (I have 4 rats). If I am around I don't fill them all up all the time but it is really convenient if I know I am not going to be able to mess with them much for a couple of days (ie going out of town) because they DO drink a lot. What size water bottle do you use for your rats?
i use Ferplast Sippy bottles in 2 cages:

    http://www.redmap.co.uk/ferretsabout/acatalog/ferplast_Sippy_Water_Bottles.html

and Classic Crystal Delux Bunny bottles in another 3 cages:

    http://www.lamp-post.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CH1621

rats drink more than any other small animal so the bigger the better really, but obviously it has to be cleaned daily as water goes stale
I have a small water bottle that goes to a little blue house in their cage, and a 16 ounce big water bottle. keeping both filled regularly helps stop them fighting over drinking, and keeps them from getting dehydrated. sometimes if they are out of water and are real thirsty i also put a water bowl in there so that all three can drink at once.
i don't have a pair of rats but i would use this,

    http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-鈥?/a>

My 2 guinea pigs and my rabbits used this one also my hamster uses the small version and i know my friend who uses this one who has a pair of rats,
I use a 'Super Pet Flat-Bac' water bottle. It works great! It doesn't drip (only for the first few mins.) and it has a little rubber duck that floats arround to show you the water level. I dont think the size matters. It all depends on what you think. Here is a link:

    http://www.petguys.com/-045125619330.htm鈥?/a>
The one I use is about 150ml. That is attached to the side of the cage. Then I have a tiny ceramic dish/bowl that was originally for sauce that I also fill up every morning. He likes to splash it around a bit but also drinks from this. I refil them everyday but if I didn't it would probably last 2 full days.
I have 4 male rats and this is the one I use:

    http://www.strictlypetsupplies.com/_0767鈥?/a>

I have to refill it every other day.
i have a rabbit sized one and a hamster sized one, i always have two for the cage just in case one breaks or something like that.
For 14 rats we have 5 medium sized water bottles.
a median, i would'nt recommend the small because you constitly need to be changing it.
    buy 2 medium size ones

    Yes

    Is cheese bad for rats?

I know some certain foods are good and some are bad for rats. does anyone know what foods are best for me to give to my ratties? Is cheese bad for rats?
I agree, cheese really isn't very good for rats. I have 7 rats. I feed them a pelleted diet called Katee FortiDiet. I believe ZuPreem also makes a good pelleted diet. If you can find any sort of lab diet or lab blocks for rats, this is also good. Pelleted and block food is good for them because it has all of the nutrients they need. If you buy the food with seeds, they will often eat just the very fatty and not very nutritious sunflower seeds. Better ideas for treats are peanuts and peanut butter, small pieces of fruit or vegetable like carrot or apple, unfrosted cereal like cheerios, or a few occational kibbles of dry dog food. Don't give your rats anything with carbonation (beer, soda, etc). And remember, give treats just every so often. You don't want fat, unhealthy rats.Is cheese bad for rats?
okay chees is fin for rats here are some other things you can give them:

    apples

    carrots

    bread (if they'll eat it)

    chips

just don't give them any poison or any beverages we drink other than water!!
give them a little square of cheese every day. it depends how many you have
Give them rat food and cheese only if you have to. The love cheese but it isnt really good for them.
dairy products are not good for rats. humans are the only mammal on earth that consume milk or milk products after they are weaned. in most animals milk will cause diaheraa and dehydration. aviod it if you can.

If you have male rats, have they gone through the agressive phase?

ive read that male rats can become very agressive at 6 months old, but this hasnt happened with mine and they are now 1 year oldIf you have male rats, have they gone through the agressive phase?
every rat is different not all go through the phases you have read about and not all go through dominance or alpha male things either. If they are a year old chances are you are lucky and will not go through it.If you have male rats, have they gone through the agressive phase?
In my experience (I have had 26 pet rats, mainly bucks) if a group of boys have been together since birth they very quickly establish a pecking order, and I don't see any of the aggresion I see amongst boys who have been introduced at a later age and so have ';something to prove'; in the cage. Aggression usually occurs around 3-4 months, when they also start to lose their baby-soft hair and go coarser and greasier, a bit like human teenage boys, haha. But your ratties sound very happy, so go enjoy them!
most don't become aggressive, I had one male that did though, it wasn't until he was a year old and up until then was the sweetest, most outgoing and bravest rat I ever had. But it seemed like overnight he became a different rat, he bit me every time I put my hand in or near the cage, started pissing excessively and hissed alot too. So I'd give it another couple of months to be sure that yours are okay. Although if at the moment they don't pee everywhere when you let them out, their piss doesn't smell strong and they don't rub a lot over the cage and toys, then you should be fine.
They don't always become aggressive %26amp; none of our males have become aggressive with maturity. Our current boys are 14 %26amp; 15 months old %26amp; still get along fine.
it largely depends on how many you have and if two or more a fighting to be alfa rat, otherwise they usually get on well together.
only to each other, and that was just a dominant thing. my three boys get on very well now but still squabble from time to time.

Health Care: Are Demo-rats just trying to wear people down, so we'll say OK, OK, just pass 0bama-care already?

I had a boss that would talk people half to death. Eventually, you would agree to anything, just to get out of his office.Health Care: Are Demo-rats just trying to wear people down, so we'll say OK, OK, just pass 0bama-care already?
i relate to your boss story. i've certainly met and seen many people like that. it's pure aggression/narcissism.

all you have to do is watch a Dem/Lib on TV in an interview. they will talk like a machine-gun - talk over you, under you, around you and just NEVER even stop to catch their breath or think about what is being said or asked.

but NO. the American people are unmoved by all that BS. we will not stand for any more crap.Health Care: Are Demo-rats just trying to wear people down, so we'll say OK, OK, just pass 0bama-care already?
No. The Democrats are wearing themselves down.

Why anyone would support this new bill makes no sense. There is nothing in this bill that will help the constituents. It is all about the insurance companies getting richer because the Democrats couldn't get along.
it actually isn't about us at all. They are still trying to wear other democrats down so they can get their 60 votes. They need to get more congressman to decide the polls showing American's don't want the bill don't matter.
That and reverse Psychology...they have their lame puppy Olberman now saying to NOT pass it hoping we will automatically disagree.....they must think we are like their sheep...trained to go against anything Rush or Glen say even when it is PURE FACTS...Libs are a sad lot at times...
Apparently, they are fighting their own base to pass this corporate handout. I remember the good days when Obamacare was about the public option and not a mandate.
The American people will know they are crooks and vote them all out if they pass another massive corporate bailout under the guise of ';healthcare reform';.
ya pretty much it seems as if the media is also trying to shove this down everyone's throat
They are hoping the Christmas holidays will distract us enough so we won't notice when the pass it.
No, that is the media's role in this cabal....
Nope, by far it is the phony conservative Limbo-cons talking more and trying to wear people down.
%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Demo-rats%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;, and you expect an honest answer?
    1. Calling names = You Lose

    2. Democrats are the boss. You got that part right at least.

Could i teach my rats to use one of these?

    http://www.interactivedoggames.com/index鈥?/a>

i think i would have to make my own, a smaller version. Could i teach my rats to use one of these?
Definitely! Rats are very smart, and are willing to learn almost anything to get at food. I would recommend leaving the panels open at first, so the rats can see the food and get them used to knowing the food is there. Every time you have them out with the game make sure there is food in it and they will get used to the fact that food comes out of it. Then slide the panels just halfway over so the rats will still see and smell the food but will have to move the panels a bit to get at it. Once they are consistently doing that you can cover the food completely and they should figure it out!

I would be very interested to hear how you build something like that and how your training goes; if you ever get it going let me know!Could i teach my rats to use one of these?
yes! it is a great idea! and yes making a smaller version is a good idea to or other wise the rat wont be strong anough to push it open!

It will be a great thing to do for your rat it is like a game but your rat will learn very easily a new trick!

I have 2 rats and i never thought of doing that!

    GO FOR IT!

    hope i helped!

    GOOD LUCK!
i dont see why not as long as you use rat treats lol no dog treats.

it dosnt matter about the size of it.

and try goinghttp://store.binkybunny.com/shared/Store鈥?/a> it is for rats as well.
Rats are small and very inquisitive. My guess is that you could easily play ';hide and seek'; with different items. You could use toys designed for very small dogs, or make your own with plastic cups and a tray. try it out and play!
    That is sooo cute!

Yeah if you made it out of like cardboard or rat safe things i wouldn't see why they couldn't figure it out.

    Their smart right?

I don't have a rat or now anything about them, except for a couple things but yeah.
    I think that is AWESOME!!!

you are a genius....for hamsters and rats that would be so good for them!!

If you do that and train your rat to be smart....then he could be like the smartest rodent in the world!!

    good luck!
Well I'm sure you could teach them with a smaller version. They are smart right? He he he.

If you go back 1 Billion years, all marine %26amp; land animals are related to the Sea Sponge...

Rats are 95+% genetically identical to us, which is why they are used for medical testing. Our genes are that similar. Chimpanzees are 98% genetically identical, and were previously used for medical testing, until it was determined to be inhumane...How are rats related to humans ?did apes and monkeys evolve from rats are they closly related by ansectory?
We also share more than half of our DNA with the humble Cabbage. so all that crap means absolutely nothing.
Humans share ancestors with apes. The common ancestor of humans and Chimps is about 5 to 7 million years ago. Gorillas Chimps and humans have a common ancestor a few million years earlier. Orangutans, Chimps, Gorillas and humans have a common ancestor about 13 million years ago. Rats are rodents and the common ancestor would probably be 60 million years ago or more. Modern monkeys share a much more recent common ancestor with us apes and would both be equally distant from rats. Our common ancestor maybe 40 million years ago with monkeys gave rise to apes and monkeys. It was obviously a specific time earlier that IT shared a common ancestor with rats.

Your average rodent shares about 95% of it's DNA with a human. More than a dog, surprisingly. Yes, we are related.
I`ve not heard the theory of rats being related to humans, but on reflection there is some human rats amongst us, makes you think dosen`t it.
dunno. ask charles darwin he came up with the theory of evolution!!
all of them are mammals....dunno if thats close enough.

their used in drug testing so they must be similar.
The Evolutionists are at it again I see. Now they are saying that my Great great grandfather was a no good dirty rat. Does anybody know of a good defamation of character lawyer ?.
Yes you can keep on going back through ancestors and will eventually find one... for example if you go way back to the Cambrian period around 580 million years ago there was a small fish less than 2 cm long that is the ancestor to all vertebrates.....rats, humans, etc.

  • Should i get a pet rabbit or rat? rats are very smart, rabbits chew though everything. ?

but rabbits r cute and soft, rats arent very soft and cute.Should i get a pet rabbit or rat? rats are very smart, rabbits chew though everything. ?
I beg to differ, I find rats very soft and cute. :P Sure, my rats aren't quite as soft as my plush rex rabbit, but softness isn't everything.

Really, you should be looking at what kind of space you have for the pet (Both rats and rabbits need a lot of space, most often more then what commercial cages give them). Also, what do you want out of a pet? Rats need to be kept in (at minimum) pairs, while a solo bunny can be happy on it's own. A bunny NEEDS to be spayed/neutered, even if it's kept solo, as it's so much better for it's health. Also, rats unfortunately only live 2-3 years even with the best care, and rabbits can live up to a decade (Or even more) with proper care. Where will you be in 2-3 years? What about a decade? What kind of life changes will you go through, and will you be able to commit to an animal through them?Should i get a pet rabbit or rat? rats are very smart, rabbits chew though everything. ?
Well, really it's your call. You decide. Would you prefer a soft and cute pet, or one thats not so soft and cute. But then again, do you want to have to deal with more work [rabbit] or less work [rat]? I actually think that rats are really cute and they aren't a lot of work, but most people think of them as disgusting. I don't mind the work that comes with the responsibility of the rabbit, because it's well worth it. I think you should get the rabbit but that's just me. So like I said, it's your call.
I think rats are better because how they act. They are lovable with their owners, they can do dog tricks, and rats are soft and cute(to me). IIf you pick a female they stink more that males. think rabbits are a bit harder because they need time outside the cage a lot and chew on things. They need big cages especially about the size of the rabbit. The good thing about rabbits they can be litter trained. Here, I have found a page that will help with you choice. Rat: http://www.quite.co.uk/rats/ Rabbit: http://www.rabbit.org/care/index.html
Well I dont know a lot about rats so I will tell you about rabbits.

They live 10+ years and are expensive!

They need regular yearly vet check-ups along with being spayed/neutered.

Yes they chew, you have to bunny proof the room that you let them have the run of.

They need several hours of of their large cages each day to run around and do happy bunny jumps.

The hay they eat gets everywhere.

You have to clean their litterbox everyday.

And most dont like to be held.

They dont stay small, some get to be close to 20lbs

Rabbits also, growl, grunt, kick, and bite.

If you want a cute and soft rabbit, get a stuffed one.

Read more about rabbits here: http://www.sandiegorabbits.org/

You should get Rats. Yes you have to get two. They are the sweetest pets i have ever owned. Males are more lap pets, but females are softer. I personally enjoy my male rat more. I think they are absolutely adorable. They are intelligent, they learn their names, they can sit on your shoulder with pretty much any household chores you have to do. Unfortunately they pee on you. Although my male rat now warns me before he pees so I'm working on potty training him. (Yes they can be potty trained)

Depends. Rabbits take up more space usually. They don't really like to be held but are social so you will need 2 of them from the same litter.

Rats are fun and they are usually a little more interactive. They do take up less space but still require a large cage. You need at least 2 + rats.

I have both. I like both. You could always get both ha ha.
I say Rats, but if you get a male rat it will be cuddlier and nice and lay-ed back, but if you get a female it will always be up and moving around and stuff, so if you want a lap pet you have to get a male.
Get a hamster. Cute, soft, hyper, and you only need one. Bunnies don't really like to be picked up and can really smell. Nothing bad about rats but you need two. Hamsters are less space and more fun.

    But its your choice!!
RATS ! they are..... smart clean cuddly usually soft cheap easy to care for can ride on your shoulder dont smell much cute AWESOME! trust me youll be happier with rats. they have the same pros and more than rabbits and less cons
Does it have to begin with ';r'; ?

    Why can't you start with ';a'; ?

(some people! - want to run before they can walk. Too impatient)
I'll say get a rabbit, they are far more cuter and loving.

My rabbit never chew through anything and loved to be held and played with.
Get a mouse. Mice are cute and soft...like a rat crossed with a rabbit only tiny.
    I say get a rabbit.

I got ratbite fever (i wasn't even bitten though). Rat bite fever got me a stay at the hospital for five days, got migratory arthritus (to the point where i could barely move), the worst headaches of my life, and a fever that didn't go down for about 2 weeks. It was the worst experience of my life, and i wouldn't want anyone else to go through it ):

One of my rats died this morning?

He seemed perfectly fine last night, but when I woke up this morning he was dead. I don't know what happened. I was devastated :(

I was wondering if I should take the other one to a vet?One of my rats died this morning?
Its hard to tell sometimes why our animals die. Especially when they act completely normal before that. I would take your other rat to the vet as precaution. Better safe than sorry once again. Sorry about your loss :-(

What colours can guinea pigs, rats, and hamsters see ?

I don't know about normal ones but the blind one that I have sees no color. I have tested this with several experiments. What colours can guinea pigs, rats, and hamsters see ?
Rodents are dichromates, same as dogs, which is the same as being red-green colorblind. Red and green look like the same color, a dull yellow. Other colors they can see, a rainbow looks like this:

Why does a rats teeth constantly grow?

The part that constantly grows are their incisors. They grow constantly because it's how they replace parts of their incisors that are shorn away by constant gnawing. Rats and other rodents use their teeth to chew through just about any material. I've heard of rats and mice chewing holes in concrete. I've seen the holes myself, so I second that ability. They also have a lot of power behind their bite. All that hard abrasion on their teeth would damage incisors like humans have, so to help their teeth stay long, they consistently regrow what is lost. In wild rodents this helps and their teeth stay reasonably worn. In pets it can cause the occasional overgrown tooth. Why does a rats teeth constantly grow?

    How big can rats get?

like everyone else said for a average rat..... although there is a breed of rat in africa that is the size of a house cat. they have started to train them to detect mines in the fields. since they are smaller than a dog, they wont set off a mine and kill everyone. and themselves. after the fine the mines the trainers place flags where the rat detects the mine. when they get a area secure they set it off so the people around the villages can start to use the fields and not be afraid they will get blown up like others. How big can rats get?
Rat can get from 7-14 inches long if we are talking about domesticated rats. I have not seen any over 3lbs, and that a very fat rat. Rats make wonderful pets, but they are not for everyone. Many other animals ';bite and chew furniture'; like dogs and cats and rabbits. However rats can be litter trained quite effectivly life a cat and do not normally urinate outside of their cage if they are not spayed or neutered. any urinating outside the cage is a marking behavior, or you have left the rat away from its litter area for too long. It is highly reccomended to neuter your rat to prevent ovarian cancer, male territorial behavior and cancer. How big can rats get?
right now my rat is about ten inches without his tail.

he's around a year and a half old.

boys are usually bigger than girls though.
I had two. Both died, different times. They make awesome pets!

They can get up to about six inches long, not counting tails.
Do you mean pet rats, or the largest wild rat?

Common brown rats and most pet rats average around 9 inches (not counting the tail) and the tail can add another 8 or 9 inches. Females can be an inch or two shorter.

The largest rat in the world is the African giant pouched rat and it can grow up to 28 inches (2 feet 4 inches) from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail.

Random fact, the giant pouched rat has recently started being used to sniff out land mines.
Well most rats can get up to one foot long but most are around 7 inches long. Personally i woulldnt want to get a rat becuase they bite stuff like furniture and they rune carpets but, if you really want one then go right ahead!

and the other one is half year oldWhy do my rats pee and poop on ANYTHING in their sight?10 points?
You can not stop them from peeing and pooing on their things, but why do you have to throw everything away? My rats pee on everything and make it stink, but every time I clean their cage I clean every single item in the cage. Hammocks, tunnels, and any cloth in their cage is thrown into the washing machine. Bowls, bottles, toys, wheels, and anything that is solid and can't be ruined with water gets thrown into the sink for a good washing. You don't have to keep throwing things away. Just clean them every time you clean the cage. Why do my rats pee and poop on ANYTHING in their sight?10 points?
Are they males or females? If they are males it is probably because they are scent marking. You cant train them to stop. It is just in their nature. You dont have to throw all of their stuff away. Just clean it off. Its easy! My rats are trained to use a litter box. Although my male rats constantly leave a small trail of pee. Try getting them a box only for using the bathroom in and it should help. I hardly had to do anything to get them to use it. Just try it and it should help. NO GARANTEES! Every rat is different. :)
there is no training them. rodents are known for the incontinence. Sorry but that is the nature of the rodent.
they eat and drink alot theres like no way to train them ans they got to get it out somhow sorry but they do that alot

  • Do rats with color really have less problems than rats with solid colors (albino ones)?

I heard that rats with solid colors (white mostly) have more health issues than a hooded rat would -or any other kind of rat with diff. colors. Is that true?Do rats with color really have less problems than rats with solid colors (albino ones)?
NO WAY!! A rat is a rat is a rat!! Color and ear shape (dumbos vs standard ear) have nothing to do with health issues. The only exception are hairless rats. The same gene mutation that causes them to be hairless causes shorter life spans, less developed immune systems and maternal instincts.Do rats with color really have less problems than rats with solid colors (albino ones)?
I think that misconception came about because the albino rats are more commonly bred as feeder rats, whereas the pretty colored rats are more often bred as pets. People who want to breed pet rats are more likely to have healthy, more well adjusted animals, and of course prettier colors for the demand. They are more likely to know the pedigree of the rat they are breeding, and discontinuing the unhealthy lines that may crop up. This is of course a generality. Ive seen some pretty colored rats in horrible pet stores sold as feeders, and also some albinos, ect that are healthy and well adjusted sold as pets.
I have had several PEWS (pink eyed whites) and they weren't any sicker than any other rattie. I believe substandard breeding practices (think pet stores and backyard breeders) are more indicative of a rattie being sicker. Females are more likely to get mammary tumors.
sort of. From what I know the difference lies in the eyes and their vision. Rats have poor, blurry vision in general but albino rats are blind or severely impaired. For more info go here, I'm going to bed lol

    http://www.ratbehavior.org/RatVision.htm
Yeah i think that the white ones can get skin problems like cancer because they're more exposed

For people who use fleece as bedding for rats?

Iv heard a lot of people use fleece as bedding for rats so the other day i got some for my two. Only, i put the whole blanket in, thinking they would put it how they like it. Only, have just bundled it into one side of the cage. Is that what you guys do? Or should i cut it up? If so, strips? Squares? Or what??

One of my rats is pregnant - and due any day! So what would be best. Iv got her some extra bedding too.

Advice appreciated :)For people who use fleece as bedding for rats?
We use fleece. The cage the rats are in has shelves and each shelf piece has an elastic strap diagonally across each of the corners that loop under the corner of the shelf.

We also put in some smaller pieces that they end up bunching up in the corner, or in one of their boxes.

We put terrycloth towels under the fleece that covers the shelf.

I can show you some photos if you'd like. For people who use fleece as bedding for rats?
The people i know that use fleece bedding for guinea pigs, put two layers of towels on the cage floor and then lay the fleece over the top, tucking it down the sides of the towels so it stays in place, then you place all the ratties stuff on top of the fleece and they should'nt be able to pull it out. Then every day you should hoover all the dropping off the top of the fleece with a vacum nozzle or dustbuster and replace the towels with fresh ones every 3 days (the fleece should allow the urine to wic through into the towels keeping the fleece dry) and then the fleece should be washed every week.

Also you may have to wash the fleece a couple of times before it wicks the urine properly.

Heres a page on using fleece for bedding http://www.guinealynx.info/bedding_fleec鈥?/a>

    I hope this helps ^-^
I have the same problem with my little rat. I herd a lot of people use binder clips to hold the fleece to the shelves, But mine is in a tank. I'll be checking this question to find out how to hold it down in a tank. :\

Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?

or any other diseases? if you let your rat walk all over you should you really wash your hands well or is it just like petting a dog?Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?
Well, it is well known that domesticated house animals do not carry salmonella unless they receive it from a source, such as contaminated eggs or bacteria. However, even though an animal might get salmonella, it doesnt necessarily mean that a human will too. Animal and human immune systems are very different and what affects an animal may do different things to people. Rats generally are very clean and are not known carriers of salmonella. However, just like any pet, you should use proper hygiene after handling the rat. Good luck and BEST ANSWER!Do pet rats ever carry salmonella?
No and they can't carry rabies either. It is just like petting a dog, and you should wash your hands after that too.

Another thing to consider is they live in a 'glorified litter box', so they are constantly stepping in their poop, so you should wash your hands just for that reason.

Fish and poultry can carry salmonella, but not mammals. I believe amphibians and reptiles too, but I'm not sure on that.
Pet rats are domesticated and don't carry diseases. It's just like petting anything else, their poop isn't exactly ';healthy'; and can contain bacteria etc obviously but that's the same with any animal and again after handling any animal you should wash you're hands..
    Just like dogs =]

You should still wash your hands after playing with any animal, just to be on the safe side.
Erm no...Except wild ones. Pet rats are great, they don't smell as bad as hamsters and in my opinion they're extremely clean rodents.

Can rats swim in a pool?

well right now i dont have a rat but i am thinking about getting one and i just had this thought- can i take the rat swimming with me? i read in a book i got about them that they are excellent swimmers. I was wondering if the chlorine might harm them or something or would they drown? i thought it would be really fun if they could since i have a pool in my backyard. Can rats swim in a pool?
Very bad idea. All your rat needs is one good inhale through the nose and she/he could die. The rats head will probably be an inch above the surface so when you swim and the water waves it could go over his/her head. Also rats don't like water. when I bathe min I only have the water just above their feet and they shriek like if someone twisting their tail. Just don't do it, it would only end badly. Also you can't just get one, rats are like people socially and if kept alone they will become mentally unstable, whether it be aggression, depression, self harm, destructive to things within in their cage, lethargy, and are more prone to sickness. And yes the shock chlorine and chemicals in the pool will cause a severe skin rash. Can rats swim in a pool?
Please don't do this. The ripples and waves in the water could cause your rat's head to go under water. Rats cannot vomit or easily clear their air passages and/or esophagus, so he or she could be in serious trouble and there is little you could do to help. If you have a kiddie pool and you could put something in the middle so you rat could get out quickly it might be ok, but i still wouldn't risk it. rats may be skilled swimmer but most don't enjoy it.
Rats can swim but i don't think you should take your rat swimming with you. The water is to deep and they wouldn't be able to easily get out when they wanted to. Chlorine wouldn't be good for them either. I don't think it would kill them because rats are very tough but it might make them sick.

I highly recommend that if you want to swim with your rat, take a bath and put them in their with you. that way they can climb on you and it won't have chlorine in it. But don't make the water to hot.

And so far, none of my rats like getting wet. Giving them a bath is like trying to give a cat a bath. They will scratch you up trying to get out of the water.

Wild Rats In My Rabbit Area - Are My Bunnies Safe?

Recently we have had some rats in our garden and have started to eat my rabbits food. I am worried that the rats could pass on a disease or attack my rabbits. It is not an option to keep them indoors. Also I cannot watch them all day as I have school..

Any advice?Wild Rats In My Rabbit Area - Are My Bunnies Safe?
Pet the rabbits and the water/food in a hutch while you are at school. If it is not rat and mouse proof make it so. Let them out in the garden when you are home and give them treats. Keep the food in rat and mouse proof containers. The rats should go elsewhwere.Wild Rats In My Rabbit Area - Are My Bunnies Safe?
get ur bunnies out of ther pronto

    they could get diseases

    move them from the garden
I don't think it is safe. Rats really carry a lot of disease and have been known to bite babies sleeping in their cribs.. etc.

Here is how to get rid of them permanently. Set a bucket in the area outside of the bunny pen. In the top, put a pan of food - could be oatmeal, vegetables. grains whatever they will eat - pnut butter gob is good too. Place a board up to the top of the bucket for their easy access. Sprinkle the board with flour or white powder - flour is best. Put quite a bit on there so you will see their 'tracks'.

After a week of 'feeding the rats this way dust off the board and sprinkle lye up the board in a good heavy dusting. You should be able to buy lye in a drug store or hardware store.

The rat's feet are oily. The lye will stick to it. They will try to get it off their feet and it gets in their mouth. For some reason, ALL the rats leave your area. I think they pass the word and all just disappear.

NOW you MUST make sure that cats/dogs etc do not have access to it. I am thinking your garden may have a fence around it and that is why I thought the garden area would be good.

If you have to put it underneath your house or barn so cats dogs etc cannot get to it. You can also use a 4'; pvc pipe to make the 'runway' up to the top of the food pan but you must duct tape it down good and put 2 rocks on each side at the bottom to brace it. It has to be long enough they can climb it easily. Then when you put the lye in you must just shake and tip until their path is dusted well.

    Good luck!

PS I was raised on a large dairy and because there was so much grain dropped from the cows' mouths and hay around etc the rats had to be controlled. Sometimes we would not see a rat for a yr or more after this treatment.

Just make sure other animals and children etc cannot be exposed to it.

  • Do rats learn more traits through life?

I've had a pet rat for a month now (She is only a little over a month old) and I haven't noticed anything special except for she cleans her hands after she eats and when she gets excited she walks back and forth side ways on the spot. I just wanted to know, will she start to do more cute things as she gets older?Do rats learn more traits through life?
Yes she will, but she needs a few things. Rats are social beings, she must be very lonely. She needs another girl rat to play with eat with and curl up with for sleeping. She's still a baby. To get another one, her age from the same place would be best. There is a thing about quarantining, but I'm not going to get into all that. Don't just plop the new rat in her cage, she will defend her home.

Introductions go something like this. put the new one in a separate cage, it's only temporary so you could get a used one and disinfect it thoroughly, put them where they can hear and smell each other. They don't see well, so the use ears and nose more.

After a day take some of the bedding out and swap it. Do this a day or two.

take the new one, put a little vanilla near her rear end and put her in the empty bathtub. You can have a hidey-hole box that your first one has never used. Then get your first rattie and do the vanilla thing and put her in the tub. That way they will meet on neutral ground. They should do a lot of sniffing and chasing and maybe stand on their feet and wave their little arms or box a little, Even if one picks on the other and squeaking is OK. If one is thoroughly trouncing the other and or draws blood separate them right away. If all goes well let the first rat in with the new one, supervised.

Then put them both in the first ones cage. Even if all goes well, separate them the first night, (they will miss each other). If it all went well, put the 2nd rat in with the first rat and they should be OK.

Now another thing; Have you been taking her out to play? Rats need time out of the cage with you. If you haven't already done this, make a rat-proofed room, like a bathroom, where there are no electric cords or holes. A fun thing for her to do and fun for you to watch is pea fishing. put a few frozen peas in a shallow non-tip pan (a round cake pan would work) put in an inch of warm water and give her the first pea.

I hope you are spending a lot of time carrying her around in your sleeve, or a hoody hood or pocket, or on your shoulder. Without a buddy she is very lonely.

Rats soon love their human and can't wait to be the first one out to see you. Even if you have 10, each one wants to spend time with you. They are kind of like dogs are that way.

Does she have a wheel, a nest box, plenty of nesting stuff to shred? The like to climb ladders, ropes, chains, poles, amything climbable. Rats like to go through tunnels which could be as easy as taping empty poptart boxes to make one.

Does she have a hammock to sleep in? those are easy to make also.

There are many good websites to learn more about rats. There is spazratz, DapperRats, RatsArePeopleToo, RMCA. these are websites.

There are some good forums at Yahoo Groups. holistarats, ratlist, lovingrats rattiehealth, and others. These will supply all you need to know.

well i have had hamsters practically my whole life and i want something different. i wanted a lot of info on rats what kind , their behavior, stuff like that. i doubt my mom will let me get one but you know it's worth a try. Please help me and give me as much info as possible. thanks %26lt;3Are Rats good pets to have?
Rats are great pets. They are unlike any other rodent.

They require a nutritionally balanced food for them..

They can use pretty much any bedding you can find, but Don't use pine, cedar or other softwoods because they contain phenols that will irritate the rat's respiratory system and lead to other health problems.

A guinea pig cage can do, if its big enough. But, rats are climbers and prefer taller cages. They thrive with a wire cage, but make sure the wires are vinyl coated (the wires will last longer than galvanized wires). A rat loves exploring a cage with levels. The only time a multi-level cage is not good for them is if the rat is injured, sick or too old to move far.

Rats rarely pass on any diseases to humans or other animals. Their bites are dry (due to the position of their teeth). But, the rats can get something from humans. If you get strep-throat, have someone else look after your rats until you are better. Rats can get strep and often die within days of getting it.

Female rats can be active their whole lives while males tend to mellow out with age. Males tend to get fatter with age, and are often known as squishes by rat lovers.

Some rats will run in a wheel or even a ball, but not all rats are like this. Luckily, all 5 of my rats have run in a wheel. Make sure the wheel is safe for them.

Rats are my #1 rodent. Gerbils are second. Hamsters are third. Mice are at the bottom (only because I've had a bad experience with them).

If you do decide on rats, please get at least two of the same gender, at the same time. Rats are highly sociable critters that need another ratty friend to do ratty things with. Humans are great too, but you can鈥檛 spend 24/7 with them, nor can you do all the ratty things another rat can do. A single rat is a lonely, depressed rat.

You鈥檒l love rats so much that you might find yourself spending a lot of your free time with them. Teaching their names, teaching tricks, giving treats and other goodies, petting and scritching them, talking, and just holding them鈥mong other things.

Are Rats good pets to have?
Well, rats are ALMOST the same as hamsters. Except I hear they are nicer (they don't bite much) and they have long tails. The part where they have tails everyone should know.

I will try to give you as much rat info that I can...Which will be enough I hope :)

Rats are bigger than hamsters so I suggest get a bigger cage, tank, whatever you are comfortable with buying. If you go into the store and see the rats, you would agree that you need more space.

Rats love living in pairs, or groups. Buy at least two rats to make them happy.

They make good pets, but may freak out your rodent hating friends/ family. I hope that they get used to it.

It'll be easy finding a diet for your rat because at every pet store, they have a mix in a bag that says: ';Rat food';, or something like that.

They live from about 2 to 3 yrs and I've read that the longest living rat was 7 yrs. Better keep your rats healthy if you want to break that record!

Oh, and the more company and happiness you supply for him/ her, the longer they would live.

They are very cool animals and all rodents are great pets. I don't really mind TOO much about looks and some rats are fairly cute!

I hope that this helps and good luck with getting a pet rat!
rats make wonderful pets, i haven't had mine for very long but they are adorable and super friendly. they're already starting to learn to come when i call their names.

some people have already given you really good advice, and the internet can be a great resource. i just wanted to remind you that the ';rat food'; you find at pet stores is usually not nutritionally balanced for rats, and sometimes it contains dried corn, which can give your rats stomach cancer. you should check out other food options, like lab blocks such as Harlan-Teklad (i think that one can be ordered online). you can also make a homemade feed mix like Suebees, using a staple like low-protein dog food. just google it, it's online.

you're going to love having rats! there's lots of info out there on training and socializing them -- they can even be litter box trained! once people get over their initial uncertainty about rodents, it's easy to see why rats are the best small animals to keep as pets. good luck!
Well . . .rats are defiantly smart, but your parents are probably going to freak out. Unlike some other rodents, though, rats are well-trained, and you can train them yourself, too!

I am sorry. I am not really a rat person, so I can't give you much information.

Rats make fantastic pets, but they're are significantly different to look after than hamsters. Rats MUST be bought in pairs or small groups to live a happy life - please don't buy just one rat - and as any rat cage should provide at least 2 cubic feet of space per rat, rat cages even for just a pair are very big and take up a lot of space. Rats are generally more active and friendly than hamsters as well and will need more out of cage play and human interaction. They are however, usually more loving and intelligent than hamsters and will smell less if looked after properly. If you want lots of information of looking after rats, I don't want to write it here or you would end up with a novel!

This is my rat group on Bebo - www.bebo.com/ratsxrock. If you scroll down to the blog section I have written a couple of blogs specifically for first-time rat owners. Blog one is about deciding if rats are right for you, and choosing the best kind to have. Blog two is about housing and the kind of home and food you should provide for rats. I'm also writing a third blog on general behavior, how to get to know and handle your rats and what games to play with them, which will be available in the next week. You can also use the group to contact other rat owners with any questions you may have. Most importantly, before even considering buying or adopting some rats read some general rat care books, visit some rat shows and talk to owners and breeders - they will be able to tell you anything you want to know about keeping rats and will provide you with plenty of opportunities to handle them. Also, feel free to email me!
Rats make excellent pets. They are very similar to dogs personality wise. They are even trainable!

However, rats are not as low maintenance as some people like to believe. They require a large cage (1.5 cubic feet per rat at the bare minimum) and it must be wire. It can also be difficult to find a proper food for them since most commercially available rat foods are actually very unhealthy if not dangerous for rats. They also can be good at racking up the vet bills.

I have several rats right now and honestly I couldn't live without them. There are tons of great websites about rat care and there is also a great book by Debbie Ducommun called Rats about their basic care.

My suggestion would be to go out and get a set up, then look in your local rescues and humane societies for an older pair or trio of rats. Since rats don't live very long if you get an older set they will likely pass within a year or a bit more. By then you'll have either decided rats aren't for you, or you'll have a houseful.

YES! They do require a lot of time, though. You have to hold them 20 mins a day and let them run around an hour a day or every other day.they also actually love you and get attached to you unlike hamsters. They live longer, too! 2-3 years usually.

i had a pet rat once and i loved him...he was a domesticated african rat i think...he was white with brown spots...he was a hyper rat too and he LOVED to play...also when you hold them they sometimes potty on you...mine never pooped on me but he peed...and rats are also prone to cancer
id say the best starter pet to have is a bunny,

you can potty train them, which is very good

they play with toys and are a low cost, they are also VERY friendly

    good luck!
yeah, they hardly ever bite. they can learn their name and even learn to play fetch, with some practice.
my friend has a few rats...they are kinda hyper active but they are pretty good pets
Rats are awesome!!! But they could be ugly...also it depends on u...

    w2ell it depends on u

    rats are kinda ugly..

Can rats gnaw through a metal can?

my co-worker insists that a rat gnawed through his unopened can of chili and ate all of it.

can rats gnaw through a metal can like this? Can rats gnaw through a metal can?
rats can chew through anything if they have a reason to like glass, metal, and even concrete. it is definitely possible a rat chewed through the can. i gave my pet rats a nut that i couldn't even cut open with a knife and within minutes they had it opened and eaten. Can rats gnaw through a metal can?
i was watching a show on animal planet and they had this most extreme show and the rat was number one for chewing because they can chew through a 6 inch thick sewage pipe.
    um, yes, they can
sewer rats. no problem. pet/feeder rats. yes but, not if you just leave them. they have to be REALLY hungry or really board.
yes they can and they do.

Besides size, what is the difference between rats and mice?

i've had 40+ rats in my life, but no mice. (afraid it will fall/jump and get lost.)Besides size, what is the difference between rats and mice?
Rats really like human companionship. They are quite social and easy to handle. Mice don't socialize well and if they get out in your house it very easy to lose them.

Do rats eat roaches for food when hungers and do they live together?

do rats and roaches live together and do rats eat the roaches as a food sourceDo rats eat roaches for food when hungers and do they live together?
they probably don't live together so much as share the same living space.

and rats eat anything. ANYTHING. my pet rats love eating superworms and mealies, and im pretty sure theyd be just as happy tearing into a big juicey cockroach.

i'm also pretty sure that cockroachs would eat the rat too, especially carcasses.

i would think that in 'the wild' they eat each other frequently, but since both pests breed so populously, them eating each other doesn't dent their numbers too much

Does anyone know how many ';toes'; that rats are suppose to have?

5 toes, my rats are sitting on me. ;)Does anyone know how many ';toes'; that rats are suppose to have?
Five. But sometimes they come from wholesale breeders missing a few. I have one missing one of her front right toes.Does anyone know how many ';toes'; that rats are suppose to have?
    5
my mice got 5 on each foot
    Isn't it 5?
5 on the front 4 on the back
    5 like all mammals
I'm thinking four or five on each foot, but I'm not sure.
    i think 3

  • If I buy a couple of pet rats, how can i get my cat not to eat them?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-h2YxyncyU%26amp;feature=channel

Like those two?If I buy a couple of pet rats, how can i get my cat not to eat them?
some cats and rats are a lot more docile than others.

no matter how friendly with each other they may seem there is always a risk they they will suddenly turn on each other, and both can do serious damge, and they could pass diseases and parasites onto each other.

its safer to have the rats in a cage, and when they are out, leaving the cat out of the room. animals can be unpredictable, especially with other species, so dont take the risk :(

however, you could show the cat the rats (while they are in the cage) and see how it reacts, but like i said, even if they seem fine with each other, dont take the risk :)If I buy a couple of pet rats, how can i get my cat not to eat them?
Most Cats won't attempt to kill a rat, but the best way of prevention is to not have the cat in the room when its ratties freerange time, my daughter has one that licks and grooms a rottweillers nose, dog likes it but myself I would not let my rats socialise with anything either bigger or smaller,
Keep the rats in a cage. Only allow un-caged rats to roam within the safety of your reach, even if you seem to think rat and cat are getting along. It's primal instinct and your cat could change it's behavior towards the rats at any time. JMO

Do rats have blood or ethanol in their circulatory system?

Do rats have blood or ethanol in their bodyDo rats have blood or ethanol in their circulatory system?
The only answer is ... ONLY BLOOD ... no ethanol (unless ingested).

Rats are mammals and are closely related to humans. Actually, you frequently hear about tests on lab rats and the information is related to humans. WHY? It is because, metabolically, rats are identical to humans. So, what happens in the rat would happen in the human.

Just like humans, rats have only blood in their circulatory system.Do rats have blood or ethanol in their circulatory system?
    Ummmm.....Seriously?

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. It is a psychoactive drug, best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages and in thermometers. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol.

Ethanol is also known as EtOH, using the common organic chemistry notation of representing the ethyl group (C2H5) with Et.

Ethanol is a straight-chain alcohol, and its molecular formula is C2H5OH. An alternative notation is CH3-CH2-OH, which indicates that the carbon of a methyl group (CH3-) is attached to the carbon of a methylene group (-CH2-), which is attached to the oxygen of a hydroxyl group (-OH).

Its empirical formula is C2H6O, making it an isomer of dimethyl ether.

Except for the use of fire, the fermentation of sugar into ethanol is very likely the earliest organic reaction known to humanity,[citation needed] and the intoxicating effects of ethanol consumption have been known since ancient times. In modern times, ethanol intended for industrial use is also produced from by-products of petroleum refining.

Ethanol has widespread use as a solvent of substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry, it is both an essential solvent and a feedstock for the synthesis of other products. It has a long history as a fuel for heat and light and also as a fuel for internal combustion engines.
Blood, but if they are anything like me, they are slowly replacing blood with ethanol
Blood, unless they've been drinking, then they have both.
only blood ,,,they have ethanol in that case if u drink with them lol

Anyone with any advice on pet rats?

have had my two pet rats since they were little but they are very scared and wont let me pick them up, anyone have any tips?!

have had rats before and never encountered this problem!Anyone with any advice on pet rats?
Why don't you hand feed them?fill your hands with food and treats that you know they like.then, slowly approach them inside the cage.Slowly, they will go to you and eat the treats in your hand.Do this for over a week and the rats will get used to your scent and soon they will let themselves be handled.

Also,i must ask:are they in a peaceful environment?not much noise or anything of the sort?if not, then I suggest you move them out of that room and find a good quiet room.stress contributes to fear too.

cheers!Anyone with any advice on pet rats?
I know rats are social animals, but do consider separating them, at least temporarily. If they no longer have each other to depend on for companionship, then they will more likely bond with you.

Keep handling them, hand feeding them, playing with them (separately), eventually they will come round. Let them have ';play'; sessions together so that they remain friends and when the time comes they will be happy to live together again.
Play with them more often. The only way for them to get over their fear is by facing it. It should not take long for them to get used to being picked up, but every rat is different.
Are you sure their not Siberian Hamster's?
yucks rats are disgusting! kill them

Is it possible for rats to live for 6 years? (all rat haters don't bother even clicking on my question.)?

my friend moses bought a rat that was two years old ( i never got to see it) he said it was a rat and he said he had it for 4 more years. was this a rat? or something else?Is it possible for rats to live for 6 years? (all rat haters don't bother even clicking on my question.)?
Yes, it's possible but highly improbable. I have a good friend who claims that she's had rats who lived to be 6 or 7 years old (when she was a kid) but the oldest rat I've ever met was 3 yrs %26amp; 4 months old.

A big reason that rats have such tragically short lives is the way most of them have been bred (like puppy mills or even worse). Also, many people don't realize how delicate these little guys are. Well-meaning but uninformed rat-lovers use pine or cedar as bedding, feed their rats unhealthy diets or expose them to chemical cleaners %26amp; other harmful substances.

1 year for a rat is approximately 30 for a human.

Is your friend sure that the rat was 2 years old when he got him/her?Is it possible for rats to live for 6 years? (all rat haters don't bother even clicking on my question.)?
its a rat people have it longer than two years like some people say you can have them longer with the right bedding to all rat people give them yesterday news cause all they fluffy stuff carries dust and they can get them sick and sneezing like crazy second the right fod and nutreints is the important part of giving a rat a extra life thats about it
no they can live quite long as long as they are fed, treated and stuff correctly if they have no stress, correct diet and treated correctly they should live longer, this could be true, i have ehard of a rat being 6 years old too, it was deffinately a rat so its likely.

    i hope i helped
It is possible but not very probable. By the time a rat is 2 in rat years its 90 in people years. But I have heard of some ppls living till they were 6. Dont know what they fed them but rats usually live between 2 and 4 years and 5 if your extremely lucky
It's possible. Rats are actually very loving. Depends on care, good nutrition, environment, etc.
The oldest lived rat on record was 7 years and 4 months old I believe.

It is definitely possible, but not very likely at all.
    Possible? Yes Likely? No
Rats usually lasts from 2 to 3 years but there's been cases of rats living longer...It could be a possibility.
    Possible but VERY improbable.
It could be possible, I guess. But I would think it would be very, very rare.
    lol rat haters
possible but quite rare : ) i love rats!

Rats making a noise is this ok?

When my rat is out on the bed or in my hand why does she make chatting noises?

Is this a bad sign?Rats making a noise is this ok?
If it sounds like she's griding her teeth together, then there are three reasons for that:

Rats will grind their teeth when they're in pain. Rats will also ground their teeth when they're under stress. And last, they'll grind their teeth when they're relaxed.

It's nothing to worry about if she's in an environment that won't stress her (does she have a cage-mate? She might be stressed over that), and it seems to me she's in a stress-free, pain-free environment when she grinds her teeth. So, she's probably just relaxed.Rats making a noise is this ok?
Does it sound kinda like a helicopter? If so, it's nothing serious, it's their way of telling you their stories. :) (it's them grinding their teeth together)

If it's a wheezy sound when they breathe, it could be a respiratory issue. Try using a dust-free bedding and taking your rat to the vet.

If it's a squeaking noise, it's often a sound of them being in pain. So be gentle with them and see a vet as soon as possible
She's bruxing, it means she's a happy rat, well done

    see this link

    Chatting noises? lol

Ask the person you bought him off.. or the pet shop, they should know!

Try and answer my q about the army thanks!!
    my rat chatters his teeth and then grooms himself its his way of ';brushing his teeth';
she is probably happy. rats sometimes brux (grind their teeth) when they are happy. my rats do it alot
i'd say she just grinding her teeth, this generally mean shes happy.

Im thinking of buying two female rats?

wondering which breed people like the most and where is the best place to buy one? and do you think my dogs(lab and yorkie) would bother them much?Im thinking of buying two female rats?
All fancy rats are the same breed, but there are differences in fur color or type (even *no* fur) as well as ear placement. Fur color %26amp; ear placement have no bearing on the health or personalities of rats, but are simply matters of preference. Hairless rats are a bit more delicate %26amp; vulnerable to chills, skin %26amp; eye problems but are just as sweet %26amp; intelligent as furry rats. If you decide on a hairless rat, your other rat should (ideally) have fur.

When we want to adopt rats, I check rescues %26amp; shelters 1st. This includes Petfinder. Our 2nd choice is a local breeder. Rescues %26amp; breeders usually have rats who are healthier %26amp; better socialized than anyone you'd meet @ a pet shop. With a rescue, you're also saving lives-- of the rats you adopt as well as the rats the rescue now has room for. We've also adopted several rats from pet shops but have had very mixed experiences %26amp; a few heartaches.

Typically larger dogs are calmer toward rats than smaller breeds. We once adopted 2 rats from a rescue %26amp; their foster person told us they loved riding around on her dog's back. Every animal has a unique personality though %26amp; I'd be careful %26amp; never let them interact without supervision no matter how well they get along. An escape-proof cage that can't be knocked over by a curious dog will help prevent mishaps.Im thinking of buying two female rats?
I really like the hairless breed and dumbo ears. That's what I have. My experience with the hairless has been kind of mixed though. The hairless I have now has never bit me, but he is more shy than my dumbo with hair. It may just because of his personality though, not breed. However, the two hairless I had before him did bite me. But one of those was badly sick so that could be why he did it, he never bit me before that. And the other one I bought had the tip of his tail missing, so he may have had an infection and that could have caused his biting, because I may have done something to hurt him without realizing. My dumbo eared rat is really the most amazing little guy. He's very friendly and sweet, never bitten and pretty well-behaved. Just make sure to do a bit of research before you buy them. Like, cedar and pine bedding is very bad for rats, that is one thing you have to keep in mind because the other bedding is more costly. I usually use Carefresh bedding or Yesterday's News. Glad you know to get two though, because getting one alone isn't a very good idea, unless you are going to be spending most of your time with him. They are very social animals. The females are more energetic and playful than males, males like to snuggle more. You should do a complete bedding change about once a week and make sure that they always have food and water. As far as the dogs bothering them, I couldn't really be able to tell you. You're just going to have to wait to see what happens. All dogs have different personalities and instincts. Although, I think that the yorkie would be more likely to bother them than the lab. Another thing is, you should get a wire cage. Glass tanks/cages have poor ventilation and can cause your rats to get respiratory infections.

Sorry if you already knew all of this. Hope you have fun with your new little ratties. :]
Like stated above, there are no breeds in the rat world. I prefer rats with dumbo ears, as I just think they are so cute. I prefer rats with black eyes, although one of my boys has ruby-eyes. I cant stand the look of pink eyes (I think it is because it always freaked me out as a kid seeing the the albino feeder rats fighting each other in pet stores). For a first time owner, I would advise you to try to find a breeder near you. They will have socialized their rats (sometimes with other animals as well as the humans) and always be available for any questions you may have. I think adopting a rat is an awesome thing to do, but with little to no experience, I think you would have more of a chance of having a bad experience. These animals were unwanted and sometime abused or neglected animals, that may have extra behavioral problems that I think are best dealt with by an experienced person (no offense by the way). Sometimes you could have good luck with an unwanted litter dropped off at a shelter, but I still say go with a reputable breeder for your first pair. I prefer females to males, although its completely personal preference. Males are just as well behaved and loving, I just prefer the no-balled look. Less scent marking.....I left my dogs sniff at my rats well I am right there ready to pull them away. My dogs have never shown aggression to them at all, but most dogs would love nothing more than to 'play' with such a small animal. I dont think they would go search them out, so I dont think its a reason to not get any rats, I just wouldnt expect them to become best buddies and play together or anything. Good luck with whatever choice you make!
Your yorkie will probably be very interested in them as terriers are ratters. Keep their cage out of reach and there should be no problems. I owned 2 dumbos and 1 fancy. All of them were great. Just let the rat pick you. Put your hand in and whichever ones are the most friendly are probably going to make the best pets.
ignore brooke, they can be in the same cage. and they wont fight. as long as you get them both at the same time, they will be fine. i prefer males as they are larger and more laid back than females.
dont put them in the same cage they may fight

How can i rehabilitate my pet rats?

about a month ago my brother in law gave me his two pet rats to take care of because he is moving and didn't want them any more. he never held them or played with them, he just gave them what they had to have (food and water) so they are extremely skittish, don't want to be held and every time you put your hand in their cage they bite because the expect food. i need to know how to fix them. pleeeeeeeease help me i really want to have fun pet rats to play with and i don't know where to start! How can i rehabilitate my pet rats?
wear leather gloves and get them used to your hands. then try to pick them up if they run then dont chase after them that will make them scared of your hands. instead taunt them with a little treat. if they wont come you might have to catch them but try not to. then hold them for around five minutes while giving them treats so they see being held equals more food. do this twice a day. increase the time each day by one min. . then after they stop biting the gloves try to hold them with out the gloves. add a bunch of toys to their cage like: a hammock, big wheel, toys to bat around, little balls, stuff they can chew on, any rat toy at the petstore will do. hope this helps. :)How can i rehabilitate my pet rats?
Start off by feeding them and giving them water.

And put your hand into the cage and allow them to smell your hand for a quick second and then fastly pull your hand out to prevent from biting.

and put some stuff in the cage such as when i had a pet rodent i put a toilet paper roll (No toilet tissue of course on the roll) in the cage.

and wear a glove such as a working glove that people usually use when tending to gardens,

so when you put the glove on, pet the animals.

and give them treats every now and then.
    1. wear an old shirt for a day or two

    2. put the shirt in the cage so they get used to your smell

    3. give them foods like yogurt off a spoon so they cannot run away with it

    4. give them lots of treats and spend time talking to them and be near the cage, soon they will get used to you
get leather gloves and mess with them... eventually they will allow you to pet them and then pick them up to be held with a lot of work.
    start with trust....they love peanuts:]

I'm interested in getting a few rats myself and I asked Petsmart about them and they said that when someone wants to adopt rats they order them. They might be able to guide you to the proper source.

I almost forgot, while I was there I bought a really great magazine which was titled ';Rats.'; It covered everything a person could possibly want to know about them and there were several pages of breeders and how to contact them.Where can i get registered rats?
Go to your local election board and ask for a list of democrats and libs. You'll have all the rats you need.
That is just gross but you can call your city hall.

I just rescued two fancy rats, I have some questions...?

Keep in mind they are around three weeks old give or take a few days. (both female)

At what age do they start to really interact?

At this age should I handle them a lot, or let the rest?

What else should I do to make them be very social and grow healthily?

And last any other tips are welcomed...I just rescued two fancy rats, I have some questions...?
If they are only 3 weeks old, they need to go back to their mother! Rats only start on solid food at 4-5 weeks, but should stay with their mother for one more week after that, which means you should only be getting them at 5-6 weeks. At three weeks, they need to be fed kitten formula supplement every few hours unless you return them to their mother. I noticed you said they are rescued, and if their mother isn't available, you do need to learn how to supplement formula into their diet for the next week. Since they are older, you could probably get away with offering kitten formula on a dish allowing them to feed themselves.

I'm not sure what you mean by interact. Rats are always highly interactive, especially as babies. If they seem scared, it is because they are not yet used to their new environment. Give them a day of complete solitude, and don't try to pick them up just yet. Leave the room so they feel comfortable to explore, sniff and scent mark their cage. Once they feel that their new home is safe, they will start exploring everything else.

Rats should be handled from birth, ideally. So after the first couple days and you notice them being a lot braver, start offering treats from your hands, stroking them gently, and eventually lifting them up. Just do not pick at them for long periods of time at first, just breif few minutes until they get used to you even more. Pretty soon, they will be coming up to the door of their cage to greet you. Rats need an 1 of out of cage time each day, if not more.

Other than that, just make sure you have feeding, caging, health and grooming researched, and have a vet clinic that accepts rats to call just in case of an emergency :)I just rescued two fancy rats, I have some questions...?
as they are 3 weeks old, they dont necissarily have to be with mum. I would personally give them some goats milk or puppy milk (cows milk is bad for animals) when they hit 4-5 weeks they would be old enough to be introduce solids or rodent food. If not tear up some bread pieces and soak it in a bit of water so its soft and mushy then it will gradually eat it too :D
They should not be away from mom until at LEAST 4 weeks old. It's best that they stay with mom until they are 6 weeks, actually. If you are able to, take them back to where you got them and leave them for a week or two. At 3 weeks old many males have not developed testicles yet, so you may not even have two girls. I had a boy once who didn't develop his testicles until he was around 7 weeks old. Now I'm stuck with two of his kids. XD

Ways to draw rats to my property? Trying to save money while getting my kid a new pet rat! thanks?

I used Pimpy, his cheesy ball smell drew them in like mad! I have so many that we are eating them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'm even making the kids take the leftovers to school for lunch to feed their friends!Ways to draw rats to my property? Trying to save money while getting my kid a new pet rat! thanks?

Just toss all your garbage out the window and let it rot awhile, they will be everywhere.

But really, just find a nice breeder in your area and adopt from there. They will be tame, friendly, and wont give you the plague :D
Don't get a rat off the street! You never know it could be diseased.

I took the glue trap and rats ou and poured bleach on the maggots on the floor. one wouldn't die so i took and object to kill it and part of it splah on my face.i ran to quickly wash my face but i am just paraniod, is it possible to get any infection from that, and is it possible to get rabies like that.Rabie and maggots from dead rats?
For you to get Rabies it must enter the blood stream, lucky for you skin is a good barrier and defense against infection, unless you have open cuts of cause, don't understand your need to use bleach tho, just bury them and then disinfect the area, by using bleach first on the dead carcase you are just spreading fluids around.Rabie and maggots from dead rats?
Rabies can only be transmitted through an infected animals bite.
