my female rat lives with my boyfriends male rat. He will eat anything my boyfriend gives him whether its veggies or fruit to crunchy chips and snacks. i will leave a fresh bowl of veggies of all kinds and little snacks because Daves pet food city said its fine. but she wont toch it and she just eats her two kinds of seeds i feel thats not enough for her and was wondering what to do or give her.Rats can eat anything right? and like to? well i was wondering why my female rat wont eat anything.?

A rat is weary about what it eats. It could be poisonous. Also, rats have taste just like humans. I've had one rat eat stuff that other rats were like, ';what's this crap?'; Also, take out the seeds and stuff, that's the wrong kind of food for rats.
dont give them junk food duh. try giving them actual pet food. it has all the nutrients they need.

First, tell your boyfriend that snacks and cereal, stuff like that, aren't meant for rats!! Those things can make them sick and ultimately kill them because of the high sodium and acids. Next, try feeding you rat a different food with more of the seeds she likes. Or, just stop feeding her store bought food, especially if it's ';Hamster/Gerbil';. If it says on the box/bag that it is alright for rats, it's really not. Here is a website for a recipe for homemade rat food that is easy to make. It's more nutritious and a lot more cheaper too. Here is a website that is for rat lovers. Oh, and I'm sure you know this, but on the safe side, unless your boyfriend's rat is nurtured or if you want baby rats, keep them in different cages =)
To start, no rats do not eat anything. They are omnivorous, which means they -can- digest foods from all four food groups, but there is a LOT they should never be allowed to eat! And you can't just let them choose what they want to eat. Of course any animal will love to eat sweet and fatty foods, but these are VERY harmful to them! Tell your boyfriend no more chips or snacks! Please don't continue feeding them crap like that, it does slowly affect their health, and they should have a proper balanced diet.

Diet is THE most important value in rat, and most other animals, health. A poor diet, and the rat will be prone to a ton of health complications, both directly and indirectly linked to what they eat.





It's wonderfu that you are giving them veggies, in fact, treats like that are great and very nutritious to them. But this can not be the main food. From those sites, you will learn that it is possible to make your own balanced diet for them. But if you are going to do this, you need to set the time to thoroughly research it. If you just keep feeding ';snacks'; you won't have very healthy or long-living ratties.

It is mostly grains and dog food. Everything must have low or no sodium, salt, sugar, fat and artificial ingredients.





If you don't want to bother with putting a mix together on your own, you need to buy them lab blocks. NO seeds! That is exactly why your female is only eating a few seeds. It's too easy for them to pick out what they prefer, and not get any other nutrients they must get. Lab blocks are blended pieces, so they get all the nutrients as long as thy eat them.





Another idea is that the femalehas over grown teeth, and is not able to properly eat any foods except the seeds. Check her teeth, they should align and look fairly short. If you think they are too long, she needs a vet to trim them. If this is the case, be absolutely cautious that she gets lots of water since she may not be able to drink with them.





And please do not house the female with the male! This is terrible. They will breed none-stop. She will have litter after litter. This much breeding is extremely unhealthy for the female, and especially since she is not eating everyhting she should, even her babies will not be healthy. The male will keep breeding, and this will stress her out as well. Please separate them.
