Why is pine dangerous for rats?

i have pine shelves (not in the cage) is it just bad if they chew it or is it bad because of the smell? could i just cover the shelves with linoleum so they cant chew them, or what? cuzz i know pine shavings are bad, but i never understood why pine is so bad for small animals. Why is pine dangerous for rats?
Your pine shelves should actually be ok. Do you intend to put them on the shelves where they will chew? No, I wouldn't do that.

The pine is bad because it has phenols which cause liver damage. (Cedar is the same way.)

rats and mice have very sensistive respitory systems and pine has bad oils and scents that could harm them if they touch them or bite them or smell them get rid of them quickly is what i recommend buy something else like metal or non toxic rubber or thick cardboard.
Please, don't cover the shelves with linoleum
They have aromatic oils that can be inhaled and hurt their lungs.
