Why does a rats teeth constantly grow?

The part that constantly grows are their incisors. They grow constantly because it's how they replace parts of their incisors that are shorn away by constant gnawing. Rats and other rodents use their teeth to chew through just about any material. I've heard of rats and mice chewing holes in concrete. I've seen the holes myself, so I second that ability. They also have a lot of power behind their bite. All that hard abrasion on their teeth would damage incisors like humans have, so to help their teeth stay long, they consistently regrow what is lost. In wild rodents this helps and their teeth stay reasonably worn. In pets it can cause the occasional overgrown tooth.Why does a rats teeth constantly grow?
