cognitive mapping is a mental representation of the layout of the environment, it seems that rats, like humans, are able to form a representation of an environment they have been in. so when the rat is left on its own in a maze for a few minutes each day, it's storing information it may need later on. in this case the exit . . . . . . . . and
that's where i'm stuck! i know that reinforcement sometimes isn't necessary, but don't know how to fit it into my answerHow could i finish this paragraph on cognitive maps in rats?
... acts as a reward for behaviour sequences that lead the rat to the exit (where finding the exit is an unconditioned stimulus in classical conditioning terms). If the rat has found the exit from a range of different routes, then a representation for each of those routes will be represented in the rat's brain and together they will constitute a map of the rat's environment.
